How to register your Online Security Device

The Online Security Device provides superior protection from a large variety of attacks, including:

  1. Fraudulent and spoof websites
  2. Spyware
  3. Phishing
  4. Trojan Horses

How do I activate my Online Security Device?

There are four simple steps to activate your Online Security Device:

  1. Log on to HSBC internet banking as usual by entering your user ID and password. The 'Activate your Online Security Device' screen will then appear.
  2. There are two different numbers you will need to enter to activate your Online Security Device.

  3. The first number you need to enter is the 10-digit serial number printed on the sticker on the back of your Online Security Device, as shown in Figure 1 below. Enter this number into the first field on the 'Activate your Online Security Device' screen.
  4. The second number is a security code generated by your Online Security Device. This six-digit, single-use security code is generated each time you press the grey button on your Online Security Device. Enter this security code, which appears on the display on the front of your Online Security Device, into the second field on the 'Activate your Online Security Device' screen.
  5. Note that the correct way up for your Online Security Device is when the grey button is on the left-hand side, as indicated in figure 2 below.

  6. Once both numbers are entered, click on the 'Continue' button. The 'Activation acknowledgement' screen will appear - your Online Security Device will now be set up and ready to use when accessing HSBC internet banking.

How do I use my Online Security Device?

There is an ongoing additional security layer.

Once activated, your Online Security Device will need to be used every time you log on to HSBC internet banking, and when completing certain transactions such as transfers to a third party or changing your personal details. The Online Security Device is easy to use:

  1. To log on to HSBC internet banking, enter your user ID and password into the logon screen.
  2. You will then see the Online Security Device screen, in which you will enter your single-use security code. Press the grey button on your Online Security Device to generate this 6-digit code (as shown in figure 2). Enter this code directly into the Online Security Device screen and click 'Continue'.
  3. When completing the following types of transactions in HSBC internet banking, you will be required to enter another security code for additional verification: transfers to third parties, bill payments and changing personal details, such as address and contact numbers. To complete this process, simply follow the above steps.
