How to Apply for Your HSBC Account

How to open your HSBC Banking account:

  • Print and complete an Application Form now. Please return the completed application form back to us with the required supporting documents either via mail or our branches or
  • Complete your application in person at your nearest HSBC branch

Documents Checklist for Your HSBC EveryDay Banking Account Application

Please help us to process your application faster by making sure you provide the following supporting documents together with your account opening application.

1. Completing Your Application at HSBC Branches

Please ensure that you have the following supporting documents:

  • Copy of passport; and
  • Copy of other identification documents containing your current address (e.g. previous utilities/rates account, electoral roll, credit card statement); and
  • Copy of your existing Bank card and last month's Bank statement.

If you are unable to provide these documents, please contact us to find out what other supporting documents can be accepted.

2. Completing Your Application via Mail

  • PRINT AND COMPLETE the Client Acknowledgement and Signature Card (All account signatories must sign the document).

    You will require Adobe Acrobat to print this form. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat, please download Adobe™ Acrobat™ Reader® from adobe.com
  • SUPPLY the following identification and address verification documentation:

Identification Documentation

One form of Primary Identification being either a current and valid passport or a New Zealand Firearms Licence

Or

Two forms of current and valid Secondary Identification, one of which must include a photo. Accepted forms of secondary identification include:

  • Credit card
  • ATM Card
  • NZ Student ID
  • Senior Citizen Card
  • NZ Government Issued Identification Cards
  • New Zealand Drivers Licence
  • HSBC Group Identification Form with relevant ID documentation

Address Verification Documentation

One form of address verification documentation from the following list which cannot be more than 3 months old:

  • Utility Bills
  • IRD Tax Assessment Notice (New Zealand)
  • Credit Card/Bank Statements from an active (ie not closed) account
  • Government Valuation on property (evidencing ownership)
  • Letter from a New Zealand employer on the employer's letterhead (subject to separate verification process)
  • Tenancy Agreement for a New Zealand address

An acceptable certifier must certify that they have seen the original, current and valid identification and address verification documentation and that the copies of the documentation are complete and accurate copies of the originals. The signature of the certifier must be placed on the copy of the document, and their contact details provided.

Please print and complete the Proof of Identity Form which will assist you in meeting HSBC's identification requirements. Please provide the completed form with your identification and address verification documents.

Categories of acceptable certifiers include:

  • Judges of District and High Courts and other Members of the New Zealand Judiciary
  • A Justice of the Peace
  • A Notary Public
  • A serving New Zealand Police Officer
  • Senior Government Department staff in managerial positions
  • Solicitors and Barristers of the New Zealand High Court
  • A Chartered New Zealand Accountant (members of the Institute of Chartered Accounts of New Zealand)
  • A serving New Zealand Customs Officer
  • An Embassy, Consulate or High Commission of country of issue of documentary evidence of identification
  • A Director, Officer or Manager of a Bank, including HSBC Branch Staff Members
